Synthesis of Stiffnesses by Springs

چکیده
A new, systematic approach to the synthesis of sti®ness by springs is presented using screw (spatial vector) algebra. The space of solutions is fully characterized for all sti®nesses realizable by springs. The main result shows that a rank r sti®ness can always be synthesized by r springs. Further, a sti®ness can be synthesized by an arbitrarily large number of springs greater than r: Algorithms and numerical results support the theory.

Coarse-grained protein-protein stiffnesses and dynamics from all-atom simulations.
Large protein assemblies, such as virus capsids, may be coarse-grained as a set of rigid units linked by generalized (rotational and stretching) harmonic springs. We present an ab initio method to obtain the elastic parameters and overdamped dynamics for these springs from all-atom molecular-dynamics simulations of one pair of units at a time. The computed relaxation times of this pair give a c...
متن کاملRobust Multi Degree of Freedom Hybrid Vibration Absorption
A robust vibration absorber reduces vibrations of a system over a range of frequencies. Passive vibration absorption is achieved with a tuned mass and spring (known as a dynamic vibration absorber (DVA)). This is a simple, low cost method of reducing vibrations at a single frequency; however, in order to achieve robust absorption a heavy mass is required. Active vibration control is achieved wi...
متن کاملSparse monolithic compliant mechanisms using continuum structural topology optimization
A formulation for design of continuous, hinge-free compliant mechanisms is developed and examined within a continuum structural topology optimization framework. The formulation makes use of two distinctly different sets of springs, the first of which are artificial springs of relatively large stiffness attached to the input and output ports of the mechanism model, and the second of which are sp...
متن کاملMechanism of leg stiffness adjustment for hopping on surfaces of different stiffnesses.
When humans hop in place or run forward, leg stiffness is increased to offset reductions in surface stiffness, allowing the global kinematics and mechanics to remain the same on all surfaces. The purpose of the present study was to determine the mechanism for adjusting leg stiffness. Seven subjects hopped in place on surfaces of different stiffnesses (23-35,000 kN/m) while force platform, kinem...
